Life Imitating Art – December 2023

When life imitates art, it can be difficult to work on a project. I remember years ago being surprised when friends stated that their dentist always checked their throat. “What for?”

“Cancer.”

My old dentist didn’t do that, but the new one does.

On October 31st, the dentist felt something in my neck and recommended an ear, nose and throat specialist.  The next morning, I started NaNoWriMo and writing about a character’s long struggle with cancer. It’s been the backstory for a series I’ve worked on for years. It was hard to recap it for the beginning of book six while wondering if I had throat cancer.

Specialist didn’t think there was an issue, but suggested a CT scan to be sure, which means waiting for insurance approval, then getting blood work to ensure my kidneys can handle the dye they use, then the CT, then back to the specialist to interpret the results. Luckily, it was nothing. Most of my books don’t have a lot of negative stuff, but bad stuff does need to happen occasionally. No reason for my life to imitate it, though.
