As we travel around, we often take note of places that are accessible to someone in a motorized wheelchair, especially places with nice, long ramps. We are able-bodied, so do not notice everything. Please pass this information along to anyone who may find it useful.
There is wheelchair access at Bradford Beach in Milwaukee, WI. With a gradual ramp and a path down to the beach.
Hilton Head, SC – January, 2021
Islanders Beach Park on Hilton Head Island has a nice ramp to the beach. This is a public park that is on the north end of the island. There are many places to stay, many with either first-floor apartments, or ones with elevators. We stayed at Island Club, on the first floor. Our resort had 4 boardwalks to the ocean, two of which were ramps. We’re able-bodied, so the slight step into the shower wasn’t a problem. (Note, we didn’t ask for a shower without the several inch barrier to keep the water from getting out.)
Accessibility in Southern Spain – January 2020
We saw people in motorized wheelchairs in Southern Spain, more in a modern city like Torremolinos than in the old parts of old cities like Seville or Cordoba. Noticed this in a hotel near the coast and thought this might be useful. https://www.mobilityabroad-costadelsol.com/
The first thing we noticed when we got to our plane from Madrid to Malagra was how inaccessible it was. There were two older people who took non-motorized wheelchairs to the base of a flight of outside stairs, then had to climb ten steep steps to get onto the plane. One of them had two people helping her, but she still needed to be able to lift her legs and stand mostly on her own. The same thing occurred in Malagra–with the descent actually harder to have people help. One woman came down slowly by sitting on each step.
Michigan UP Falls – September 2019
The lower part of the Tahquomonon Falls in the Upper Pennisula of Michigan has good views that are accessible from a wheelchair. There is a boardwalk that offers several good views of the lower waterfalls with a viewing area a third of a mile from the parking lot.
Whitefish Dunes State Park, near Sturgeon Bay, WI (Door County) – September 2019
Whitefish Dunes State Park has a nice viewing area that is accessible to motorized wheelchairs via a short trail. The parking lot has handicap parking spaces very near the trail for the viewing area and the visitor’s center. Handicap bathrooms are located inside the visitor’s center which opens at 10 a.m.
Door County Winery – July 2019
We visited the Van Stiehl winery at Algoma around 3:00 on July 20, 2019 and were impressed by the ramp leading to the histoic building. They also had good wine tastings, with a variety of reds and whites, many that were not cherry or other Door County fruit based.
Von Stiehl winery is located at 115 Navarino Street in Algoma, WI. The main building, with a tasting room is on the National Register of Historic Places. The winery also features a 10,000 sf production facility and a spacious outdoor terrace with Lake Michigan views.
West of Sedona, just off 89A, is the road to Cultural Center Trail. The road is rough near the parking area, which is dirt, but the trail is paved and gradual. There are small rocks on it in places, and it crosses a dirt road in the middle (where the trail is then dirt). The views are good.
There are picnic tables at the trailhead and a vista view after 1/3 of a mile. The parking lot is just dirt, and the road is a little rough near the end.
Whitewater Preserve, CA – December 2018
Driving from Palm Springs to LA, there is a lovely area called Whitewater Preserve. It has a smooth path around a pond, a picnic area, and accessible bathrooms in the building.
