Ingredients:

  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 4 1/2 teaspoon yeast
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 3 or 4 cup flour (about)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 stick butter (1/2 cup)
  • 2 eggs (can use an additional one for glaze)
  1. Mix water and yeast in bowl. Add 1 1/2 cup flour and 1/2 cup sugar. Stir, cover and let rise 20-30 minutes. (Melt butter & warm eggs now.)
  2. Mix in everything but flour, then add flour gradually, checking carefully after 3 cups. Knead with electric mixer for 3 minutes.
  3. Cover, let rise 1 hour.
  4. Punch down, knead lightly, shape into braids.
  5. Let rise 2-3 hours.
  6. 325 for 30-45 minutes.
  7. Makes two loaves.
